San Diego: The importance of good leaders

The importance of leadership and support for UBTs stood out for us in San Diego when we visited in April. We met with Tony Minks, assistant administrative chief and Bill Cory, MD, administrator, part of the leadership team for the San Diego Medical Center. Both are progressive thinkers and get the importance of connecting business success to team performance. They both explained that being very open with their teams about the issues they faced lead to great improvement.

We also had the fortune to spend time in Pasadena with Jerry McCall, Senior VP of Operations for several of the hospitals in SCAL. Spending time with Jerry  is like a primer on good leadership. How lucky we are as an organization to have a leader like Jerry who spends two days each week in the Medical Centers.

“How can we help the people doing the work if we are not in the centers where the work is done?” he asked us.

He understands the importance of spending time with the people doing the work! Jerry also underscored the importance of teams being responsible for doing the work and figuring out how to do the work better. What a great start!

There is more than just medical in KP!

Hey Paul and Stan,

In San Diego we have the California Service Center. We are a little-known entity in KP with 700 employees who handle the administration of individuals, groups and Medicare for all of Southern California. We are out front in Partnership Goals and are ready to take over with UBTs in 2010. I would like to see more reports on how administrative departments in KP have utilized Partnership successfully. Thanks.
