Business literacy training poster from Module 1: KP entities
Business literacy training
Related story and tool
Northern California’s business literacy program begins with three modules—KP Entities, Revenue and Expenses—and then teams move onto the final two modules—Non-Payroll and Payroll.
Each module also can stand alone.
The modules are designed to be delivered in a just-in-time format that can easily be incorporated into team meetings or huddles and doesn’t require employee release time.
Module 1: Kaiser Permanente Entities. Defines the three entities that make up Kaiser Permanente, how they work together, why Kaiser Permanente’s integrated business model provides a competitive advantage and why the model matters to members at the unit-based team level.
Module 2: Revenue. Describes the revenue sources, what percent comes from each source, how the economy affects revenue, and why retaining and growing membership is important.
Module 3: Expenses. Includes how revenue is spent, budget margin and margin goals, the importance of operating within budget and how departments get their budgets.
Module 4: Non-Payroll. Explains non-payroll expenses, how to read a non-payroll budget, variance and non-payroll budget by department.
Module 5: Payroll. Explains how to read a payroll budget and a payroll variance and data report. Describes how time away from work affects the budget and discusses balancing coverage and operational needs.
